Portugese reports say Arsenal set to make official offer for Sporting striker

According to Portuguese reports, Arsenal will finally make an official offer to sign Sporting Lisbon attacker Viktor Gyokeres, whom they want at the end of the season.

When Sporting Lisbon signed Gyokeres from Coventry last summer, the transfer attracted little attention. However, months later, this might be one of these campaigns signings of the season. The Swedish striker has been a big hit at Sporting. In 43 games in all competitions, he’s scored 36 goals and provided 16 assists.

His revival in Portugal has attracted a lot of attention. However, Arsenal, which has identified him as their top transfer target, is believed to be one of his most serious suitors according to the local publication Jornal de Noticia.

This summer, we expect the Gunners to bolster their attack with the addition of Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah. Speculation suggests that the Arteta project is just a clinical strike away from achieving its full potential. Some claim Arsenal would have easily avoided the 2-0 Villa defeat last weekend if they had a top No. 9 to tap for goals.

Viktor Gyokeres could be the mysterious striker that Mikel Arteta intends to recruit to weaponize their attack for next season.

According to Jornal de Noticias, Arsenal is now so eager to reach an agreement on Gyokeres’ move this summer that they are more inclined to launch an official attempt to sign him.

With a slew of other European giants interested in the Swedish striker, his transfer swoop will be tricky to secure. Sporting Lisbon may only be willing to let their star player leave for a premium. Thus, the £85 million release clause in the 25-year-old’s contract at Jose Alvalade Stadium may need to be activated for his signing.

Obviously, with a reliable source for goals, Arsenal’s pursuit of greatness may become easier next season and in the years to come. And so, hopefully, Arsenal’s bid for Gyokeres goes through.

ADMIN COMMENT

So here are some simple rules which I must insist commenters follow….

You agree not to give any personal abuse to other Arsenal fans. Everyone is allowed to hold their own opinions even if you disagree with them. It COSTS NOTHING TO BE POLITE TO OTHER ARSENAL FANS.

  1. We had the chance to sign him for “peanuts” from Coventry but chose not to.He is the same player he was in the Championship but now he is going to cost a fortune.Seems like a costly error of judgement if we decide to recruit him after one good season in the sunshine.

    1. Grandad, Apart from MARTINELLI, can you thinkof any other undoubted top class current player we have signed from another club, without overpaying, or in the case of Rice, getting full value, while still needing to pay an extra high fee?

I can think of none, other than MARTINELLI,and that is a depressing situation!!

        1. Well I can se he is good value Grandad

But even so he was not exactly cheap, whereas Martinelli WAS actively cheap. As you say, Brighton are far and away the best bargain getters in the entire PREM
WE must be among the very worst, surely?

            1. Yes Joe, Chelsea are far and away the very worst of all.

But they are a joke outfit, meaning the whole club , not merely the team, so we should not judge ourselves by them, since we are also bad in buying for good value.

    2. no Arsenal supporters or pundits were even vaguely interested in Gyokeres when at Coventry, his stats were decent 41 goals in 110 appearances for Coventry but nothing to suggest an opportunity too good to refuse

‘costly error’ is a bit over the top, unless you care to lend us your crystal ball, no one saw €100m then

still a question mark about Primeira Liga form translating to Premier League too

example Liverpool paid £85m for Nunez, his output is no where near the ‘elite clinical’ striker Arsenal crave

Liverpool failed to score against Palace with exactly that profile of expensive striker we go on about

      1. You are mistaken because I raised the matter of signing Gyokeres on JA as I was impressed with his performances for Coventry and at that time a number of our regulars agreed with me.I have no doubt be was watched by our professional scouts on a number of occasions but they obviously did not consider him to be good enough even though he could have been bought for around 15m.

    3. If we had signed him from Coventry back then, he would still be “learning by observing” from the bench while the costly Kai Havertz continues to fluff chances. Arteta only trusts big names and is statistically inept in nurturing talented but inexperienced players. He can prune already blossomed players but can’t guide them into blooming. So far, he has only been able to nurture experienced players like Odegaard, Saka, Saliba, Gabriel, etc. If he had joined a year earlier, Saka, Martinelli, and Smith Rowe would still be cup players, and Saliba would have been sold. I’m glad Gyokeres didn’t join us earlier.

  2. Look as I said, 36 goals is great, but it is against inferior opposition. It cannot be converted to the premier league. It would be like Jesus or Nketiah dropping down a league to the Champions league and then scoring 40 goals, which would probably happen, but it does not mean Jesus and Nketiah could then score 40 goals when returning back to the premier League. It’s not the amount of goals that matters it’s about big game players that can produce goals against great opposition teams like Real Madrid. man city, Liverpool etc.. These are the type of strikers we are missing at Arsenal, big game strikers.

  3. We also have great creators on our squad; Odegaard, Saka, and others who create opportunities.

The question is how often does he put away chances when he has the opportunity to score? Conversion rate matters when we create so many chances.
